{"id":156,"date":"2007-08-17T09:10:08","date_gmt":"2007-08-16T21:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/2007\/08\/17\/belfast\/"},"modified":"2007-08-17T09:10:08","modified_gmt":"2007-08-16T21:10:08","slug":"belfast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/2007\/08\/17\/belfast\/","title":{"rendered":"Belfast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday was a bank holiday in Ireland, so Matt and Kat had the day off.\u00a0 We decided we'd catch a train up to Northern Ireland for the day.\u00a0 Cathy's question of the day was \"I wonder how much they pay Stephen Hawking to do the train announcements\".\u00a0 \u20ac34 one way if we bought at the train station, or \u20ac18 return on the Internet!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gallery.dubculture.co.nz\/uk2007-belfast\/IMG_1129\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.dubculture.co.nz\/albums\/uk2007-belfast\/IMG_1129.thumb.jpg\" align=\"left\" height=\"113\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a>The biggest attraction in Belfast is the beautiful City Hall, which we took a tour of.\u00a0 We all got to sit in the Lord Mayor's chair, but the chair the Queen sat in was out of bounds.<\/p>\n<p>There are two areas we were told to look out for street art; the first was the Falls Road area, where there's lot of protest art and a very anti-Bush, don't-meddle-with-the-world feeling.\u00a0 You have to walk through some pretty dismal streets to get to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shankill_Road\">Shankill Road<\/a>, where you're immediately greeted with more British flags than you have ever seen before. <a href=\"http:\/\/gallery.dubculture.co.nz\/uk2007-belfast\/IMG_1175\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.dubculture.co.nz\/albums\/uk2007-belfast\/IMG_1175.thumb.jpg\" align=\"right\" height=\"113\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a>It's safe to assume we're not in the Republic any more.\u00a0 It's a working class Protestant suburb, and I think they like the Queen here more than they do in England.\u00a0 Patriotism is such an odd concept, but people really want to identify with somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Belfast had a huge shipbuilding industry around the turn of the century.\u00a0 They built the Titanic here, but I'm not sure why they're proud of it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gallery.dubculture.co.nz\/uk2007-belfast\/IMG_1210\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.dubculture.co.nz\/albums\/uk2007-belfast\/IMG_1210.thumb.jpg\" align=\"left\" height=\"113\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a>Here's Tom climbing a fish.<\/p>\n<p>We still laugh every time we hear an Irish person say 'potato'.\u00a0 Apparently everyone else has heard this twice, but I haven't.<\/p>\n<p>A nice meal topped off an excellent day.\u00a0 The train ride home was quiet and full of sleeping people.<\/p>\n<p>I'm now exactly 10 days behind on uploading photos and writing about the trip!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday was a bank holiday in Ireland, so Matt and Kat had the day off.\u00a0 We decided we'd catch a train up to Northern Ireland for the day.\u00a0 Cathy's question of the day was \"I wonder how much they pay Stephen Hawking to do the train announcements\".\u00a0 \u20ac34 one way if we bought at the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[67],"tags":[58],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/156"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=156"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/156\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=156"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=156"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/craig.dubculture.co.nz\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=156"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
