Microsysinternals releases Process Monitor

Take Filemon and Regmon, combine them one program (apparently rewriting from scratch), and then change the license to make a previously invaluable sysadmin toolset potentially require payment. Thanks, Microsoft.

  1. If a program is truly "invaluable" wouldn't that mean it is worth paying for?
I guess invaluable could mean you don't know how much it is worth but it is generally used to say the something is worth a lot...

I agree that it is a pity that Microsoft have made it necessary to pay for something that was previously free though.

My opinion is that it's somewhat rude that a company sells a system that requires third-party diagnostic tools, and then buys the free third-party diagnostic tools and tells people that they have to be purchased also.

I will continue to use the versions released under the old EULA.

  3. I can certainly agree with that 🙂

I'm just arguing over semantics really...

I'm also going through a slight mind set change myself, instead of thinking "every thing should be free" I'm starting to think more about how much something is worth to me.

  4. Craig says:

Sure, these tools are worthwhile, but if someone else thinks it would be better to write their own and make them free, I'd rather donate money to that.

This comes down to the idea of micropayments. I'd also rather that you could get everything of value by making one convenient payment, rather than piecemeal!
